Toolbox talk: plant and vehicles

UK construction toolbox talk. Support, not legal advice.

This is a ready-to-give toolbox talk on plant and vehicles on site. Keep it to about five to ten minutes, run it before the work starts, and make it about the plant movements happening on this site today. Use it as a script, adjust it to the job, and take questions at the end.

Why this matters

Being struck by a moving vehicle or machine is one of the biggest killers on a building site. It happens because a person and a moving machine end up in the same space, and the operator, sat high up with big blind spots, never saw them. An excavator slewing, a dumper reversing, a delivery lorry pulling in, all of them can kill in a moment. The point of this talk is simple: people and moving plant are kept apart, and where they have to meet, it is managed.

The main risks on the job

What you must do

Key points to remember: keep well clear of moving plant, and never assume the operator has seen you, get eye contact first. Use the pedestrian routes, not shortcuts through the working area. And if a machine has to reverse or work blind, a banksman controls it and everyone else stays clear.

Questions to discuss with the crew

Record the talk

Write down the date, the topic, who gave the talk and who attended, and keep it on file. The record shows the briefing happened, and it is often asked for by the principal contractor or in an investigation after an incident.
