RAMS Writing Checklist: Essential Items

20 items — Free printable checklist

RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) are required for virtually every construction activity. Poorly written RAMS are a leading cause of enforcement action and project delays. Use this 20-point checklist to ensure your RAMS cover everything before submission.

Include full project details: site address, client name, principal contractor, project reference
State the specific activity or task the RAMS covers (not generic descriptions)
List all applicable legislation and standards (CDM 2015, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, etc.)
Identify the competent person responsible for supervising the activity
List all personnel involved by role and confirm CSCS/competency requirements
Complete a full hazard identification for the task using a systematic approach
Assess each risk using a suitable matrix (likelihood x severity = risk rating)
Define specific control measures for each identified hazard (hierarchy of controls)
Calculate the residual risk rating after control measures are applied
Include all required PPE with exact specifications (not just 'appropriate PPE')
Detail the plant, equipment, and tools required with inspection/certification requirements
Describe the step-by-step method statement in clear, sequential order
Include emergency procedures specific to the task (rescue plan, first aid, spill response)
Address any environmental considerations (dust, noise, waste, water discharge)
Include details of any permit-to-work requirements (hot works, confined space, electrical)
Reference any relevant COSHH assessments for substances used in the activity
Include a communication plan: toolbox talk delivery, briefing records, site contact numbers
Define any exclusion zones, barriers, or signage required during the activity
Include review dates and triggers for RAMS revision (change of scope, near-miss, incident)
Ensure sign-off section for: author, reviewer, client acceptance, and operative briefing records
